A sway bar is a steel bar that ties the left and right sides of the suspension together so the body stays flatter through corners. That link between the two sides helps on pavement and works against you on rock, which is why many Jeeps and Broncos let you disconnect the front bar before hitting the trail.Nearly every modern vehicle has one. The proper name is an anti-roll bar, and it does exactly that. When the body leans in a corner or across an off-camber section, the bar twists and pushes back, keeping the vehicle level and predictable.

Why it helps on the highway

Body roll is what makes a tall truck feel tippy in a fast corner or a highway on-ramp. The sway bar resists that lean by transferring load across the axle, which keeps the tires planted and the steering response consistent. On a lifted rig with a high center of gravity, that bar is doing real work every time you turn the wheel.

Why it fights you on the trail

The same connection that keeps the body flat also forces the two sides to move together. With the bar connected, one front tire climbing a rock pulls against the other side instead of moving on its own.You feel that a few ways:
